My Number One Rule

So today I'm in a super good mood because I got to go to the fabric store to get supplies for my next project!  I'm making a jacket and dress from a Cynthia Rowley pattern...you will get to see it all when it is done ;)

But this is something that I feel so strongly about: the fabric you use for your design will make or break it.  I have seen sooo many designs that start out well but the fabric is too flimsy and makes it look cheap, too fragile and it practically wrecked by the time you sew the final seam, is too stiff and gives you no flow or liquidity, and plenty of other situations as well.  Then I have seen other designs that take my breath away because of a pattern or color, or the mixes of texture, or an airy, ethereal quality.  More and more I find myself thinking of pursuing a career avenue in textile design, or in the merchandising segment of a company so I can make the seasonal fabric selections.

But let this be a lesson to you: DO NOT compromise on your fabrics!  Spend the extra cash, go to another store, or even wait if you can't find "the one".  Trust me, it's worth it.

I'm Just Saying

Style is more than following the latest trend. Or having the prettiest dress.  Or having the highest heels (ok, well, maybe the last one a little bit).

But style is taking something old and making it new.  Making something out of nothing.  Carrying your head high with a swagger in your hips. Style is turning peoples' heads and making them take a second look.

And She Loves Sparkly Dresses Too!

SketchMania!

So this past week I've been daydreaming away and sketching up some awesome ideas I want to try out this summer.  We've got bloomers, sweatshirt boleros, obi waisted skirts, retro bathing suits, vests made of scarves, and more to come!

Soooooo....who thinks we could get Mary Jo's or JoAnn's to sponsor me?

Too Good To Be True

Ok, so first off, if you haven't heard of KidDangerous, you need to go check them out: www.kiddangerous.com, because they are totally sweet.  They are an LA based apparel company, and their designs are in no way for the meek or soft-spoken.  Which is exactly why I love them!

So anyways, in this interview with them (http://www.944.com/blog/danger-zone/) I found that they will be offering a line in Urban Outfitters and so yeah...this is going to be like one big super-addiction for me!  Haha I'm sooo excited I can't wait.

However, in the meantime there is a sample sale next Thursday here at Tech to tide me over.  :)

Random, but...

This is a random picture I found hopping around online. I have no idea what it's from, but I know it's breathtaking.

Get Your Jean Envy

So in Intro to the Fashion Industry class the other day we were discussing mass customization and our professor brought up this site: www.makeyourownjeans.com.  And can I just say, it's awesome!!  You get to make your own totally unique pair of jeans, made to fit exactly you.  You choose the wash, style, and then put in all of your measurements so that they fit you like a glove.  And I was totally surprised at how affordable they are- most pairs are only around $50!  That's cheaper than any pair in my closet right now!  You can also get other custom pieces, such as shirts, pants, and even coats.

I hope that sometime soon I will get some spare moo-lah and can test this site out.  I will definitely update on here and give you guys a first-hand review!

Ok everyone, here is a link to the Collegiate Time's photo gallery from Free the Beat!  Not all of the show's looks are here, but in the middle you can see my: reconstructed t-shirt, blue sailor blouse, and zebra print skirt!  Enjoy!

Designer You Should Know

Elsa Schiaparelli, b.1890 & d.1973, is one of the most influential designers of the past century.  She made her mark with her Surrealist point of view and has left many innovations that keep her spirit alive with every turn of the season.  Here are some pieces of her legacy:

Schiaparelli's 12 Commandments
  1. Since most women do not know themselves they should try to do so.
  2. A woman who buys and expensive dress and changes it, often with disastrous results, is extravagant and foolish.
  3. Most women (and men) are color-blind. They should ask for suggestions.
  4. Remember- 20% of women have inferiority complexes. 70% have illusions.
  5. 90% are afraid of being conspicuous and of what people will say.  So they buy a gray suit. They should dare to be different.
  6. Women should listen and ask for competent criticism and advice.
  7. They should choose their clothes alone or in the company of a man.
  8. They should never shop with another woman, who sometimes consciously or unconsciously, is apt to be jealous.
  9. She should buy little and only of the best or cheapest.
  10. Never fit a dress to the body, but train the body to fit the dress.
  11. A woman should buy mostly in one place where she is known and respected, and not rush around trying every new fad.
  12. And she should pay her bills.
The Fashion Innovations of Elsa
*Zipper closures on her evening gowns, no doubt for the quick escape from the dress, for whatever reason.*Graphic knitwear, knit with emblems, humorous touches.*The wrap-around dress (no, DVF didn't come up with it on her own, although she did perfect it and make it what it is today).*Mix-and-match separates for a more flexible wardrobe.*The backless swimsuit for
the perfect tan on your back.*The built in bra.*Culottes and pants for the modern woman, at a time when women were not supposed to advertise that their legs were actually connected all the way to their ankles, the way many of the early-century outfits made it look.*The wedge shoe.*The jumpsuit.*The overall.*Paper clothes.*Transparent raincoats.*Folding eyeglasses.*Fun furs.*The scarf dress.*Colored stockings.*Athleticwear and sportswear.*The shirtwaist jacket.*Ethnic-themed collections, including quotes written on the fabrics.*Cast buttons in artistic forms, looking more like brooches than buttons, adding to the garment and not just closing it.*The power suit, the shoulder pads and inverted triangle shape minimizing a
woman's pear shape. (She called it "the wooden soldier" look. Others called it "the nutcracker princess" look.
ouch...)*Surrealist fashions, such as erotic-shaped hats, food-looking accessories, fabrics printed with body parts, bones and organs, even household furniture, so your breasts look like a bureau drawer.*Synthetic fabrics with bold patterns & special finishes.*Ensemble outfits with coordinated dress, jacket, scarf, and more.*Waterproof cotton.*The modern idea of a fashion show with a runway, music, art...

I'm a Proud Mama

So yes, as I predicted, the fashion show was AMAZING!  The models were flawless and worked every single garment.  Including my stuff! Seriously, I did dance for 6 years, walked across a graduation stage weighted down with honors cords, but absolutely nothing could compare to the pride I felt watching my blood, sweat, and tears coming down that runway, under big lights, with hundreds of people watching.  Yes, call me a sap, but I practically cried.

Unfortunately I have an exam in 10 hours so I had to skip the after party :(   Buttt be on the lookout because maybe in the next few weeks I will have some images from the show to post on here!

TONIGHT!!

In approximately 6 hours, doors will open for the FMDS "Free the Beat" Fashion Show.  And you had better BE THERE!!  No joke, you will be sorry if you don't go.  I don't think anyone can really imagine how big this is unless they have been to some of the previous shows.
This year LA design company KidDangerous will be selling some of their looks for wholesale, and popular shoe company and activist TOM shoes will be there, premiering a special edition "Free the Beat" shoe available for ordering.  Plus we have guest judge Meredith Wendell, a popular accessories designer from NY, and who used to work at Marc by Marc Jacobs, by the way...
In addition, we have an after party to follow downtown (free if you still have your show ticket).
This show is seriously like a piece of NYC plopped down in the middle of Blacksburg.  We have a full runway, VIP section, DJ, and last year we had about 1000 people attend.
So seriously...it's legit.  And you should be there!

Recessionista Gold

Over the past few months, Kmart's ads have really been catching my eyes in fashion magazines.  The last time I bought something from a Kmart, it was a sky blue skirt with a leather lace up the middle, when I was about 13.  But the looks featured in the March issue of Vogue magazine are definitely covetable!

This has been by no means a mistake.  John Goodman, Executive VP of home and apparel for Sears Holding Apparel, which owns Kmart, says that they are really looking to gain credibility in the apparel channel in the market.  And a major step that they are taking towards that goal is by vending a line by none other than Selena Gomez.  Selena, at 17, is a teen queen starring on the Disney channel's "Wizard of Waverly Place"
Tuesday's WWD magazine had the full story on this line.  The line, entitled Dream Out
Loud, has the look of  "Texan cowgirl meets the glam Boho chic of Hollywood".  It carries everything from a jersey blazer to a boyfriend cardigan to short cowgirl boots, and each piece will retail for $24 or less.  Here on the right, Gomez appears on the cover of WWD in one her looks for the line.  Looking towards the future, Gomez would like to begin to expand into the teen guy's department as well.
The line debuts July 15.  I know I definitely will be coming through, with the number one item on my list the boyfriend cardigan!

Oh Hot Damn!

See this is why I LOVE dollar pattern sales!

And I also loooove Project Runway!  I am SO excited Anthony is back.  I will miss Maya, but I definitely understand her decision. She wants to come out strong straight from the gate, and if taking a little time to gather that strength is what it takes, then I say go for it.
